The Artists

Dr.Damian Roberts OHMS

Owner and ultimate pain in the butt at Uptown Tattoo, originally on K road, Auckland CBD and now residing seaside in Matakana.

Damian Roberts has been tattooing for 30 years, starting out in Auckland City. He has mastered the art of both American and Japanese traditional tattooing while also excelling in many other styles.

He has a wide knowledge of tattoo history and a deep appreciation for traditional tattooing, owning Uptown Tattoo for over 20 years. With two apprentices during his career, mentoring two more currently, Damian’s passion for the craft has not diminished. If you’re looking for someone with knowledge, experience, and passion for his work, Damian is your man.

Ash Flash

Ash has recently achieved 10 years in the tattoo industry.

After completing her apprenticeship at Stained Skin, she settled at Uptown Tattoo here in Matakana.

She has a love for American Traditional tattooing. Many of her original flash stems from this style, although her incredible linework has made her excellent in styles such as fine-line and mandala tattoos.

Over her career Ash has mastered many areas of tattooing, and with her appreciation for custom, original designs, she never fails to produce excellent work.

Amara

Amara has been working as an apprentice at Uptown Tattoo since July 2023.

She has been specialising in fine-line tattooing under the guidance of Damian and Ash, and is always fine-tuning her skill set. She has developed a strong foundation through learning about traditional ways of tattooing, from the way machines work to the value of starting with paper and pen.

She will be exploring various styles throughout her apprenticeship and is interested in traditional and blackwork tattooing.

Finn

Finn, a year into tattooing, fell into it after Damian and Ash introduced him to traditional style tattooing.

They showed him artists such as Stoney St. Clair, Edward Funk, and Samuele Briganti, to name a few.

Finn is interested in large, framed, traditional tattoos, and has produced solid traditional work in the space of just a year. He will soon be building his own old school bulldog tattoo machines.

His hope is to tattoo his own hand drawn flash, with hand-built machines.
